The recent bird flu outbreak in Hyderabad, Telangana, has severely impacted the poultry industry in Namakkal, Tamil Nadu, leading to a sharp drop in egg procurement prices, now at ₹3.80 per egg.
With a huge stockpile of unsold eggs in Hyderabad, demand has hit a new low, causing prices to fall below ₹4 for the first time in over three years. Poultry farms in Namakkal are bearing heavy losses, estimated at ₹7 crore per day. “The cost of producing an egg is around ₹5.20, making this price drop unsustainable for farmers,” said ‘Vangili’ Subramaniam, President of the Tamil Nadu Egg Poultry Farmers Marketing Society.
In the past five days, egg prices have plunged by ₹1.10, putting severe financial strain on poultry farmers. The National Egg Coordination Committee (NECC) in Namakkal Zone recently fixed the procurement price at ₹3.80 per egg, reducing it by 20 paise from ₹4.
Farmers are now urging authorities for support as they struggle to cope with these drastic losses in the poultry sector.
